Your Road. My Road. Our Road.
I have spent alot of time watching people in my industry lately. The personalities run from the normal to the fanatical to the comical.
Some people are at the front lines of the cause, waving their swords, painting their faces blue and screaming “freedom” whilst riding a rather large horse. When others are at the back, sipping their tea discussing the outcomes of battle, and quietly whispering encouragement to the people with the swords. Then you have people like me, who during the battle found something shiney on the side lines and it led us to a puddle of mud, which we are now having a whale of a time playing in whilst watching the fireworks.
Don’t get me wrong, the champions are the leaders who guide us through the rocky mountains that is SharePoint. The intellectuals are the people who hand us new ways of doing things, and pick us up and dust us off when we slam our heads on the ground because Kerberos decided to set up booby traps. And then you have the army: the rest of the community who keeps the passion, the drive and the momentum going, the horde of geeks that stick together no matter what, and form a huddle of knowledge, support and belonging.
Those of you who know me, know I am not a very serious person. I do what I do with mostly a bounce in my step, a lollipop in one hand and a glass of red wine in the other. I enjoy what I do, actually, I love what I do. I am a breed that is little known in the SharePoint community. I am a Brander, a Pixel Pusher, a Colour Junkie. When most developers look down their noses and call us ‘non technicals’, we bounce along and take your vanilla site and make it a sundae of colours and pictures, and user friendly… yes, you are welcome.
I made a decision a while back to stop being so hell bent on following a certain track, the one to become an MVP, I changed my track / mindset and decided to start writing, start finding my passion when it comes to UX, start enjoying my work and my life and do what I do, and stop trying to be something I am not: Serious. Because Serious people do not collect lollipops, and do not get invited out to the best parties – thats it, I am the Pinkie Pie (My Little Pony) of the SharePoint Community. I appreciate the fanatics, I do, but I can’t be one of them. I appreciate the developers, but knowing me I would be re-installing SharePoint every 2 hours due to memory leaks and endless loops. I am a cheerleader for these people though, because they inspire me.
My Road is a SharePoint one. It is rocky, filled with potholes, and there is no sign of a maintenance team, but you know what? It is my road, and I love walking down it every day. The SharePoint community is a force to be reckoned with, each person brings their own special delight and skill to the party, and the sharing is endless. It is a community I am proud to be part of, and they accept me for who I am, not expecting anything from me which I cannot deliver. I am lucky as my mentors are amazing people, they keep me going even when I struggle to put together a black and white theme due to lack of inspiration, and they make sure I stick to my little path.
SharePoint is not a platform. It is a Religion. And one I am damn proud to be a part of.
